20 Time - Mickey Mouse

I worked on creating the first coloring page of my book this week. I decided the only true way to kick off the coloring book would be with one of my favorite characters of all time - Mickey Mouse. Going through the steps of finding what to draw and how to fill in the patterns was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. There was the issue of trying to find out what stance to put Mickey in to make sure that the outline was still discernible to the audience, and what patterns to fill up the outline with. I decided that I would try and go for more of a flow-y style with a bunch of circles, but then I realized that it was becoming really monotonous to draw and wasn't giving much style. I added some different patterns, but still tried to make sure that those patterns were repeated enough times since that's part of the reason that coloring books are considered to be a de-stressing tool.

I first sketched out the outline in pencil, and then went over the outline in pen so I could erase the designs inside without worrying about erasing the outline itself. I started off with wide circles and worked my way up the outline, adding mandala patterns to the ear area. After erasing the pencil, I thought it would be fitting to also show the work that my eraser went through, since it started off new. Overall, I think that I could have done better on the pattern, I don't think it goes together very well so I'll probably try just sticking with one repetitive pattern outlined in different shapes than trying to merge a bunch of different ones next time. I'll probably try and make the next one more specific to SHS and Saratoga rather than something general like Disney, so it can affect the community on a more personal scale.

  1. Wow, that looks really good! I actually really like how you switched up the patterns and put them all in one, but experimenting with what you can do is a good idea as well. However I think that with such small details it will be a little difficult to color unless the paper is bigger.

  2. Your coloring page looks so cool! I wonder if there are certain things that you can color in order to de-stress more/less, like are there certain patterns that have a greater effect, or is it simply the act of coloring that makes you feel more relaxed?

  3. Nice job! I really love how you created more than one pattern within the drawing so that it will allow for more creativity in the coloring! I agree with what you were saying- where the next drawing should appeal to a wider audience- but I also think that maybe you could ask students what they like and see which "topics" are going to be most popular to draw!

  4. This is amazing!!! I thought the different patterns went well together! Having some pages like this one and pages with simple, repetitive patterns will definitely make your book really unique! I'm excited to see your finished product at the end of the semester! :)

  5. Hi Simrun, I am so excited to see your first coloring page! I can't wait for you to put together the book at the end, perhaps you could link a few of these as pdfs because I totally want to do one of these. Your drawing skills are amazing; I'm so jealous. I am looking forward to seeing your next one :)

  7. I really like your topic! your first design looks amazing. I was wondering what you plan on doing with the coloring book when you have finished. Will you be making copies to have other people with high stress color? I love your idea and can't wait to see your next sketch!

  8. That looks really cool, Simrun! I really like how the different patters come together. Maybe you should scan it in so there's a clearer picture of what you drew so that we can follow along with our own styles! It looks really good! Keep it up!

  9. Looking good. I really like how you took pictures of your whole process of drawing the patterns into the mickey mouse to create the coloring page. I do have to agree with Cassi's point in how with all those small details, it would be hard for someone to color it if they're just coloring for fun.

  10. Wow this turned out super cool! I feel like it would be so cool to see how this ended up turning out and I'm a little bit interested in as this looks when fully colored in! I like your designs and I was wondering how you plan to outline the drawing? I know that ink pens smear a lot so i feel like using a thin ballpoint pen would work best since it looks like its in pencil right now

  11. Love it! Do Minnie too for a pair? One suggestion I'd make is to make the space between lines bigger so that the person doesn't have to keep switching colors (I hate when I have to do that- I end up messing up a lot). Keep it up!
